FILIGREES - Intermediate level
Experience required: Elementary level certificate and three Gothic hands
(9-month course, 3 semesters)
This course involve exercises in touch and movement using traditional tools and is a review of the main Gothic hands.
The art of filigrees is purely graphic; the artist needs a good sense of esthetic and
a stable hand in order to achieve harmony between fine lines and balance in design.
The first part of this course focuses on the technique of Italian filigrees
taught in the workshops of Genoa during the 13th and 14th centuries
During the second semester students will further their knowledge
with the style of filigrees popular in French manuscripts of the 13th century.
In the 3rd semester, practical exercises with doodles using large initials and illustrations
will bring students to a new level of complexity and satisfaction.
For their last project, participants are encouraged to let their imagination inspire them
and create a new style of filigrees.
Applications: filigrees can be combined with any style of gothic writing. They impart
unusual visual effects to illustrations.
