About 70 people gathered at the residence of the Consul General of Japan to listen to a presentation on Japanese crests and European heraldry sponsored by SATSUKI-KAI INC. Mrs. Kuwako Takahashi gave a slide presentation on the history of Japanese crests and their present use in Japan. For the occasion she was wearing a very elegant "haori" bearing her family crest. As in Western culture, these marks of identity can be placed on clothing and objects such as lacquerware and books. Muriel Gaggini followed with a lecture on
the history of European heraldry from the 12th century to the present
also illustrated by slides. Participants were able to admire items
on exhibit from both Japanese and European traditions.
ABOUT SATSUKI-KAI Satsuki-kai was founded in 1957 to assist Japanese corporate wives in better adjusting to their new lives in San Francisco. The club offers a wide range of activities ranging from golf, bridge, volunteering and art appreciation. The group holds several programs annually and the Japanese American Cultural Exchanges is one of their highlights. |
