The first lesson of any given course on historical hands covers the general equipment and materials used by traditional calligraphers and deals with the groundwork exercises, which will enable the student to establish such basics as posture, correct hand position, pen angle and warm-up strokes. Following lessons focus on the historical hand itself.
All the courses taught at the MG School are designed to provide guidance to the student in order to achieve an elegant, personal and beautiful style of written expression. The unique approach in teaching will give the student the opportunity to acquire not only artistic and technical skills but also to gain better understanding of the elements which animate the spirit of European artist calligraphers and their cultural traditions.
The MG School of Latin Calligraphy offers a certificate program at three levels, ultimately leading to the Diploma of Calligraphy. This program should be of interest to currently practicing designers and lettering artists and serious students of calligraphy whose goal is to bring their skills up to professional standards and become accredited through an academic assessment system.
The MG School of Latin Calligraphy also offers those who are interested in attaining professional level, the opportunity to earn certificates in calligraphy. The Certificate Program may be entered at the time of registration. Students must present original work for review by the faculty after completing the required courses, as follows :
Elementary level: six pieces showing 5 individual styles of writing .
Intermediate level: eight pieces of individual styles of writing, including two pieces showing techniques of illumination.
